Nutritionist vs Dietician vs Nutritional Therapist vs Holistic Nutritionist
The main role of a Nutritionist is to help patients achieve optimal health through advice on food choices. A Nutritionist is an expert in nutrition, however because the title is not protected by law in the UK, anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist. For your peace of mind you should always check if your Nutritionist has appropriate training and belongs to a respectable professional body.
Dieticians work mainly in the NHS and are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. Their professional body is the British Dietetic Association.
Similarly to a Nutritionist, the title Nutritional Therapist is not currently regulated by law in the UK. For your peace of mind, always ensure that your Nutritional Therapist is registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the professional body which was set up with the government support to protect the public. CNHC Registered Nutritional Therapists undergo a high level of a three year training to be eligible for registration. As a Registered Nutritional Therapist I was trained in clinical practice in the principles of Functional Medicine, to give one-to-one personal health advice. Functional Medicine (Functional Nutrition) vs Holistic Medicine
Functional Medicine (Functional Nutrition)
Functional Medicine (Functional Nutrition) is a systems-oriented approach aiming to get to the root cause of health issues. It is a science-based healthcare model that is based on the following principles:
- We are all biochemically individual, based on the concepts of our genetic and environmental uniqueness
- Patient-centred approach, not the disease-centred approach
- The factors that influence our health is a complex web of interconnections, not just a cause and effect approach
- The role of a practitioner is to help the client find dynamic balance between all aspects of their health (body, mind, spirit)
- The health should be viewed as the presence of positive vitality, and not just the absence of disease
- Promotion of organ reserve with nutrition
Holistic Medicine / Holistic Nutrition
Holistic medicine is a system of healing that addresses the whole person, not just physical body but also any mental and emotional issues. As a holistic Nutritionist in London, Harley Street, I see every person as individual with different problems and different goals. Taking holistic approach means looking at the whole person. I dig deeper, and I explore all aspects of clients’ health, on a physiological, physical, and mental/emotional level, to connect the dots between the symptoms and the underlying causes of health issues.
As a holistic Nutritionist I recognise that we are all biochemically unique and what works for one person does not work for another. Each nutrition plan is completely unique. As a holistic Nutritionist in Central London, Harley Street, I believe in the healing power of food, however, there is no one nutritional strategy that is right for everyone. Please see the holistic Nutritionist page for more information.
What to expect when you see a Nutritionist
A Nutritional Therapist (Nutritionist) works with clients on one-to-one basis conducting assessments of their health, ordering and analysing laboratory testing and writing nutrition plans. Nutritional Therapist (Nutritionist) can support patients with chronic health conditions, as well as clients looking to optimize their health. Holistic in approach, Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist (Nutritionist) will seek to identify and address the root cause of the health, skin or weight issue, with a focus on looking at the whole health picture, understanding that the mind and the body are interconnected.
An initial consultation with a Nutritional Therapist (Nutritionist) normally takes about one hour. During this time the Nutritional Therapist (Nutritionist) will ask questions about the client’s condition and conventional treatment, medical history, diet ,and lifestyle. The Nutritional Therapist (Nutritionist) may also perform tongue, face and nail examination ation to get a better picture of the client’s health. Please see the Harley Street Nutrition Consultations page for more information.
